Toshiba manufactures milestone 500th Aquilion ONE system Aquilion ONE™.

Otawara, Japan, September 25, 2012 - Achieving a milestone in the advancement of computed tomography (CT) in the practice of diagnostic medicine, Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation announced the production of the 500th Aquilion ONE™ system, which is to be installed at PRP Diagnostic Imaging at Norwest Private Hospital in Australia.
Toshiba and PRP Diagnostic Imaging have developed a strong relationship over the years which will see the installation of the 6th Aquilion ONE system within the PRP network.
Aquilion ONE provides up to 16-cm coverage per gantry rotation and permits fast scanning with low dose. It also incorporates Toshiba's unique reconstruction technique, Adaptive Iterative Dose Reduction 3D (AIDR 3D). The clinical usefulness of low-dose dynamic volume imaging, which can be performed only with the 320-row Aquilion ONE, is widely recognized.
“Leading clinical experts have been actively involved in developing unique and exciting clinical applications exclusively for the Aquilion ONE. The adoption of these unique applications globally has allowed us to reach the production of the 500th Aquilion ONE system” said Yasuo Nobuta, Vice President and General Manager, CT Systems Division, Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation. “ We hope to expand these applications even further to improve patient care, while at the same time minimizing the overall cost of healthcare to an even larger patient population globally by aiming to reach production of the 1000th Aquilion ONE system."
“The Aquilion ONE, with its advanced dose reduction technology, AIDR 3D, and ultrafast scan speeds allow us to dramatically lower radiation dose and reduce examination times without sacrificing image quality or diagnostic accuracy.” said Jonathan Page, Chief Operating Officer, PRP Diagnostic Imaging. “We are extremely pleased to be able to provide our patients with the benefits of such state-of-the-art technology.”
World Premiere - Toshiba announces a new era in ultrasound imaging
New Aplio™ series shifts boundaries for imaging, intervention and productivity in ultrasound imaging.
Vienna, August 26, 2011 - At this year’s World Congress of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (August 26-29. 2011, Vienna), Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation (TMSC) introduces its new and outstanding high-end ultrasound series, the Aplio 300, 400 and 500. Under the motto “A giant leap forward” Toshiba offers unique features such as Fly Thru and Smart Fusion that take ultrasound imaging to a new dimension.
“The new Aplio series offers an extensive range of clinical innovations presented in a fresh, extremely smart and ergonomic design. State of the art technologies and pioneering new features enhance all aspects of ultrasound imaging raising the highly successful Aplio brand to an entirely new level”, said Dr. Jörg Schlegel, Global Marketing Manager, Business Unit Ultrasound at Toshiba Medical Systems.

Fly Thru utilizes perspective rendering to let you virtually dive into a volume data set and explore cavities, ducts and vessels from the inside and in 3D. While conventional 3D imaging displays the surface of a given structure by parallel projection, FlyThru uses perspective projection to display a given structure, emphasizing the near over the far field much like in optical endoscopy.Smart
Fusion: Smart Fusion is a powerful navigation tool that allows combining different imaging modalities onscreen in realtime. It reads 3D DICOM data sets from all major imaging modalities such as CT and MRI. A position-sensor with sub-millimetre accuracy is attached to the transducer shaft to provide free access during interventions. Matching the transducer position with the pre-acquired 3D data set is a simple and quick two-step process, making this tool easy to work with in daily routine.
“We not merely wanted to maintain our excellent reputation as the undisputed leader in image quality in the ultrasound market but wanted to chart new territory in order to offer our customers completely new diagnostic options”, concludes Joop van de Kant, Clinical Marketing Manager Ultrasound.
To assure the new Aplio series is most beneficial, Toshiba decided to involve highly renowned clinicians in the development from a very early stage. This teamwork led to a further improvement of image quality compared to Aplio XG, which represented already the benchmark in today’s high end market. “Even though we are very satisfied with the image quality of our current Aplio systems, the new Aplio 500 gives us even better spatial resolution and imaging contrast”, says Dr Adrian Lim, Consultant Radiologist and Head of the Ultrasound Department at Charing Cross Hospital in London, UK.
Prof. Dr. Thomas Fischer, Radiological Institute at Charité in Berlin, said: “In addition to the stunning quality of the B-mode image, Smart Fusion is most beneficial for clinical settings. This is the first feature to routinely allow calling up CT data sets and combine them live with the ultrasound images. That means I can navigate the CT and the ultrasound image in realtime, change values of the CT scan, directly compare findings, perform biopsies and administer contrast agents. Since the function is very easy to handle it is excellently suited for every-day clinical use.”
Bill Smith, Head of Ultrasound Services at Clinical Diagnostic Services in London, UK, underlines the advantages of the Fly Thru option for gynaecological and obstetric scenarios: “Fly Thru is opening up completely new perspectives for non-invasive imaging diagnostics in the Ob/Gyn ultrasound lab. It offers the possibility to replace endoscopic examinations and may yield better results because the surrounding tissue can be seen at the same time as well.”
“High Density Rendering is a magnificent 3D/4D option that provides images of the fetus even better than current MR imaging techniques”, Dr. Rainer Bald, Head of Prenatal Diagnostics at Klinikum Leverkusen, adds.
Moreover, iStyle+ Productivity improves ergonomics and makes handling of the system much easier and therefore optimises workflow and increases the consistency of exams. “Aplio 500 works with impressive speed, offers a beautiful, compact and powerful design and excellent imaging in all modes”, said David Cosgrove, Senior Research Investigator at the Institute of Clinical Science at The Imperial College in London, UK.
Toshiba (booth E400) makes Cardiac CT safer with Robust Dose Management by new 'AIDR 3D' Technology
Toshiba presents improved, dose-reduction software that lowers patient dose up to 75 percent, while providing better image quality routinely, at ESC 2011
![]() |
| Add caption |
ZOETERMEER, NETHERLANDS, August 2011 – To make today’s cardiac CT examinations even safer, Toshiba Medical Systems Europe has introduced the next generation of dose reduction technology - AIDR 3D.
This advanced software lowers the radiation dose to the patient by up to 75 percent compared to conventional scanning. This results in the best image quality at the lowest possible dose, enabling clinicians to make better and more accurate diagnoses routinely.
This innovative new technology is available with Toshiba’s Aquilion ONETM, AquilionTM PRIME and Aquilion CXL systems and will be showcased at the European Society of Cardiology Congress that takes place from 27 to 31 of August 2011 in Paris, France (booth#E400).
Adaptive Iterative Dose Reduction 3D (AIDR 3D)
AIDR 3D is the abbreviation of Adaptive Iterative Dose Reduction 3D and is a sophisticated algorithm that has been specially designed to work in both the three dimensional reconstruction data and raw data domains. The collective AIDR 3D process results in robust noise reduction, which is essential for achieving ultra low dose examinations in routine clinical CT imaging. AIDR 3D can be routinely applied to all clinical acquisition modes and is able to remove up to 50 percent of image noise maintaining image quality, resulting in dose reduction of up to 75 percent.
Integrated, Robust dose management
Integration of dose reduction technologies is essential for optimal dose management. Therefore, AIDR 3D has been seamlessly integrated with SUREExposureTM 3D, Toshiba’s automatic tube current modulation software.
SUREExposure 3D modulates the exposure for each patient, based on a pre-set, target level of image quality. When combined with AIDR 3D, x-ray exposure is automatically reduced before the scan, while maintaining the pre-programmed image quality adjusted for the expected level of noise reduction. This combination provides a unique solution for robust dose management.
"As a global market leader, Toshiba makes the extra effort to provide systems, solutions and advanced technologies for Ultra Low, Dose CT examinations," said Henk Zomer, Toshiba's Senior Business Unit Manager CT. "By seamlessly integrating AIDR 3D with SUREExposure 3D Toshiba takes a unique position in optimizing dose management and reducing patient dose to sub mSv level."
Clinical experience in Monash Medical Centre, Melbourne, Australia
"The Toshiba solution for iterative reconstruction technology (AIDR 3D) has proven to be an effective method for reducing patient dose for every routine clinical examination performed on our CT system. AIDR 3D works to reduce image noise by up to 50% while maintaining spatial resolution, which is an impressive development. Reduced noise in the reconstructed images permits reduced radiation dose to achieve a similar level of diagnostic image quality. In our clinical setting dose reduction of up to 75% is achieved routinely as AIDR 3D is integrated into the automatic exposure control software, which prospectively calculates the tube current for each examination based on our preferred reference image quality. Quite simply there is no guess work needed, and the perfect balance of image quality at reduced dose is completely automated with consistent results. The comprehensive dose reduction solution offered by Toshiba was implemented into our routine clinical practice during the first morning the software was introduced. The additional reconstruction time that is required by the iterative technique is measured in mere seconds, which has had no impact on our clinical workflow.
I have seen a lot of advances in CT technology over the years that have expanded the clinical utility of CT, and now we have advanced technology that is dramatically increasing patient safety.”
Commitment
Toshiba’s commitment to reduce dose in CT is an ongoing project that began with the design of the first CT system back in 1978. And it doesn't end today. "Although AIDR 3D is once again a significant step forward in reducing patient dose, I can assure you that our engineers will continue to develop state-of-the-art technologies to offer the most robust dose management, with excellent diagnostic examination results," says Yasuo Nobuta, Vice President and General Manager, CT Systems Division, Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation.

In line with this commitment, a comprehensive training program is available that ensures that operators become proficient in taking advantage of Toshiba's dose reduction technologies available for every scan, providing clinicians with maximum image quality at the lowest possible dose to the patient.
Toshiba announces European Roll-out of AIDR 3D Adaptive Iterative Dose Reduction
Toshiba's ongoing commitment to Patient Care and Dose reduction
ZOETERMEER, The Netherlands, November 2011 – Encouraged by field tests showing the efficiency of this new Iterative based reconstruction technology in clinical practice, Toshiba has decided that all new, and already installed, Aquilion ONE, Premium and PRIME scanners, should be entitled to this new technology. Without the need for substantial upgrade costs.
Clinical results show that AIDR 3D substantially reduces noise, while preserving sharp details, providing “natural looking” images. Reconstruction performed with AIDR 3D permits substantial dose reduction when compared to scans performed with traditional Filtered Back Projection (FBP) techniques. The AIDR 3D algorithm is designed to work in both the raw data and reconstruction domains and optimizes image quality for each particular body region.
As patients come in all shapes and sizes, automatic exposure control systems have proven to be very useful to maintain diagnostic image quality at a radiation dose suitable for each patient. It is therefore imperative that exposure control systems automatically react to dose reduction technology where made available to the customer. Toshiba’s SUREExposure 3D exposure control system is fully integrated into the imaging chain. With the integration of AIDR 3D in the scan protocol, the exposure is automatically reduced by up to 75% while assuring the best diagnostic image quality at the lowest dose for all patients.
Clinical experience in CHU Nancy, France
“When Toshiba installed AIDR 3D, our staff initially looked critically at the image quality for all type of scans. We may say that we are very happy with the Image Quality and surprised by the low dose levels. Follow-up studies, when compared to previous scans, already clearly demonstrated the impact of AIDR 3D” says Prof. Alain Blum-Moyse, Head of Radiology CHU Nancy, France.“Noise is reduced dramatically. However this new technology is especially good in artifact suppression (streaks, beam-hardening, etc.). With AIDR 3D integrated in the SUREExposure 3D we were able to achieve a dose reduction by up to 75% by the same Standard Deviation (SD) for noise. But we found in some studies, with the same SD the image quality was so good, we could increase the SD even further, resulting in an even higher average dose reduction!! We are very enthusiastic with AIDR 3D, a very promising application is chest CT-scan with ultra low dose, I don’t think we will miss any nodule or lymph node with these scans.”
Key features of AIDR 3D
• Full integration in scan protocols for improved workflow
• Dose reduction in clinical setting by up to 75%
• Minimal penalty in reconstruction times

First worldwide multi-center trial confirms efficacy of combined CT angiography and myocardial perfusion imaging using 320-detector row CT - Results of the CORE320 trial presented at ESC 2012 .
ZOETERMEER, NETHERLANDS, 7 September 2012 - Combined non-invasive CT coronary angiography (CTA) and myocardial perfusion (CTP) with 320-detector row CT allows accurate identification of flow-limiting lesions requiring revascularization. This is the main findings of the first worldwide multicenter trial assessing the diagnostic performance of combined CTA and CTP as compared to traditional assessment of flow-limiting stenosis by means of SPECT-MPI and invasive coronary angiography (ICA). Results of the trial, CORE320, sponsored by Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation, were presented during an ESC Hotline Session by Dr. João A. C. Lima, MD, senior author of the study and Professor of Medicine and Radiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
“The CORE 320 study is the first prospective, multicenter study to examine the diagnostic accuracy of CT for assessing blockages in blood vessels and determining which of those blockages may be preventing the heart from getting adequate blood flow. We found an excellent correlation in results when we compared the 320-detector CT testing with the traditional means of assessment using a stress test with imaging and cardiac catheterization” says Dr Lima.

381 patients completed all imaging and were included in the primary analysis. The patient-based diagnostic accuracy (AUC) of combined CTA and CTP for detecting or excluding flow-limiting CAD without history of CAD was 0.93 when the ICA stenosis reference standard was ≥50%. CTP increased the diagnostic accuracy of CTA alone to delineate flow-limiting disease (AUC: 0.87 vs. 0.81 respectively, p<0.001). The combination of CTA and CTP had similar diagnostic power to the combination of ICA and SPECT-MPI in identifying revascularized patients at 30 days.
The researchers say the two tests combined - CTA and CTP - still produce less radiation than a cardiac scan with the 64-slice CT scanner in widespread use today. Dr Lima said “In our study, the amount of radiation exposure to patients from the two 320 slice CT scanner tests was half the amount they received as a result of the traditional evaluation methods - the angiogram and nuclear medicine stress test combined”.
The unique ability of Aquilion ONETM, the dynamic volume CT system used in CORE320, acquires the entire heart in a single temporally uniform volume permits accurate myocardial perfusion analysis. The perfusion technique developed for Aquilion ONE provides perfusion images at the lowest possible radiation dose when AIDR 3D, iterative reconstruction, is applied.
“One of Toshiba’s core missions is to validate its technology through clinical trials by leaders in the medical field,” explained Satoshi Tsunakawa, President of Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation. “CORE320 has shown that it is now possible to perform a comprehensive cardiac functional and morphological analysis in just one, low-dose examination using Aquilion ONE. This technology can reduce the need to perform multiple examinations using different modalities, a true economical advantage and valuable contribution in cardiac healthcare” said Tsunakawa.
The Aquilion ONE system, in conjunction with Myocardial Perfusion software available on the VitreaTMfX and Vitrea Enterprise Suite (*1), includes all the features used for CORE 320 data acquisition and analysis, allowing physicians to perform myocardial perfusion imaging in their institution today.
“Training is another essential part of Toshiba’s myocardial perfusion solution,” said Tsunakawa. To assist physicians in implementing myocardial perfusion into their clinical practice, Toshiba is sponsoring the Myocardial Perfusion CT Workshops held at Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, Denmark. Dr Klaus Kofoed, the Co-Program Director, participated in CORE320 and brings a wealth of experience from the trial to all attendees.

The industry leading wide gantry aperture of 90 cm combined with a true scan field of 70 cm provides extreme exam flexibility for CT simulation, trauma, bariatric and interventional procedures.
Aquilion LB also features Toshiba’s renowned “Quantum PLUS Detector Technology”. The finest details are depicted by 16-row data acquisition with 0.5mm thin slices, providing the best low contrast visualization and 350 micron spatial resolution.
The “Next Generation” not only features all of the above, but has been enhanced with the latest state-of-the-art technologies to improve patient care at reduced dose.

“Double Slice Technology” allows 32 images to be generated in a single rotation without dose penalty. The acquired volume data can be reconstructed at double density, resulting in sharper images and provides vastly superior MPR and 3D reconstructions.
The robust “Respiratory-gating system”* minimizes image artifacts, associated with respiratory motion and provides reliable 4D CT gated images to evaluate respiratory motion. Respiratory gated scanning is available in both prospective and retrospective scan modes, and can be applied for all patients, even those with a slow respiratory cycle as low as 6 breaths per minute.
The new “Phase Averaging Function”*, enables stacking of multiphase data to demonstrate tumor movement in one static image. In addition the “Advanced 4D Viewer” includes a target tracking function so the region of interest is always shown in-plane during cine playback.
The “Next Generation” Aquilion LB stands for a fast and flexible Workflow. New console architecture, remote access by a network PC equipped with SUREXtension™*, provides direct access to the main console for instant reviewing of patient data, without affecting the main console.
The new architecture and visualization of the “Next Generation” features will be highlighted at the ESTRO ** 2012 congress in Barcelona, May 9 – 13 (Toshiba booth nr. 20, hall P1, Polivalent Area).
