Toshiba for Health
History that we should all know
Physicians use medical imaging for the fast and accurate diagnosis of a range of health conditions.
With stroke or heart attack symptoms, medical imaging is one of the fastest ways physicians can diagnose a patient’s condition.
Like all medical procedures, medical imaging should be used carefully, accurately and appropriately to aid diagnosis.
The decision to undergo an imaging exam should be made by a physician and patient together.
Patients should ask their physician about their imaging exam to understand why it is recommended.
Not all medical imaging exams are the same. Some emit radiation, some do not. For example:
X-ray exams emit very small amounts of radiation
CT or CAT scans emit radiation
Catheterization labs emit radiation
Ultrasound exams do not emit radiation
MRI and MRA exams do not emit radiation
Some medical imaging exams also use contrast to enhance the images, some do not. Prior to undergoing some exams that use contrast, diabetic patients and patients with renal insufficiencies should talk with their physician about any concerns they may have.
Medical imaging for children should be customized to their height, weight, age and situation.
Patients with pacemakers or other metal implants should talk to their physicians before having an MR exam, which uses a magnet in scanning.
Pregnant women should consult with their doctor before undergoing medical imaging exams.
